I bought this phone when it released at a Verizon store as a free upgrade from my very much aged iPhone 4, and I'm glad I picked this phone. Personally, I think the white version looks the nicest. The aluminum feels really soft but is really rugged and survived the 2 months I went using it without a case no problem. The back glass is nice and strong and even 7 and a half years later it still hasn't cracked. It does get pretty hot sense it's on the latest firmware, but if the device is OEM Unlocked (like mine) you can just flash a clean install. Root is an option, but its pretty tricky and personally I just couldn't get it myself.
